Urolithin A (UA) is a gut-microbiome-derived metabolite of ellagitannins. Ellagitannins are polyphenolic compounds naturally present in plant foods such as pomegranate, almonds and walnuts. UA is being investigated for its role in cellular health through its effects on the mitochondria.
Upon ingestion of ellagitannin rich foods, these compounds are metabolized into UA by the microflora in the large intestine.
